Helmut is an avid rock climber and dedicated clinician. He has been a practicing physiotherapist in Calgary since 2007, after earning his Master of Science in Physiotherapy from the University of Alberta. Since then, he has gained extensive experience treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.
Helmut is a Certified Manual Therapist, specializing in IMS/Dry Needling, and is also authorized to provide Diagnostic Imaging referrals. Additionally, he contributed over seven years to the Banff Sports Medicine Knee Clinic Research Group, focusing on post-operative ACL and MPFL surgery rehabilitation and research.
Originally from Brazil, Helmut moved to Canada in the early 2000s, drawn by the majestic Rocky Mountains, which he now calls home. His climbing journey began in the early 1990s, and he quickly ascended to the ranks of Brazil’s climbing elite, contributing to the sport’s development for over a decade. His travels to various climbing destinations have broadened his perspective on the sport and its intersection with his clinical practice.
Helmut’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Physical Education from University Gama Filho (1998) and a Specialization in Sports Performance Training from UNOPAR (2000). This combination of expertise enabled him to pioneer performance methodologies for climbing in Brazil during the late 1990s.
Currently, Helmut is focused on exploring the intersection of sports performance and rehabilitation, with an emphasis on promoting healthy longevity for athletes and the general community. His enthusiasm extends to collaborating on and designing new research projects.
Outside of work, Helmut enjoys climbing both indoors and outdoors, hiking, cross-country skiing, and pursuing his long-standing passion for photography in the mountains.
